2023-03-03 | Texas Independence Referendum Act | Personal visit | My wife, myself and our four kids visited Mr Dorazio's office per the recommendation of Tony Tinderholt's staff. Mr Dorazio's staff said he does NOT support the TEXIT referendum. I asked for an opportunity to change his mind. I did not get to speak with him personally but spoke with his staff for a good 20-30 minutes. His chief of staff was very busy with phone calls but made an effort to meet with us. He mentioned that public support is much lower when you point out that people will no longer be US citizens or receive social security. I said this is not true, the only way to lose your citizenship is if you specifically renounce it. The US has no provision for automatically losing your citizenship. I pointed out that there are many, many, many US citizens living all over the world and they continue to receive their SS benefits. The chief said he thought the US would do anything it could to cut off Texans if Texas were to leave the union. I said I don't believe they will do that but of course there is always some uncertainty. Besides SS is projected to run out of money in 2028 anyway. After the chief left I spoke with the legislative aide Dallas Emerson. He was actually much more open to it but was more concerned about the process, that the Texas legislature is very intertwined with the US government, and that we're not ready yet. I didn't argue too much on that point because I don't want to trivialize the major changes that will bring for them, but pointed out it will be a process and doesn't need to happen overnight. They certainly love Texas just as much as we do, and acknowledge the attacks from the federal government, but are still coming to terms with what TEXIT would and could mean for them. It seems to me a fear of the unknown. |
