The Texas Nationalist Movement just made history again as the Republican Party of Texas officially added our secession plank to their platform.
For many years, the TNM has worked to organize members who are also members of one of the three major political parties in Texas. The purpose is to empower them to influence their political party’s platform and policy direction and steer it toward pro-TEXIT, pro-TNM policies. In short, if the TNM’s policies become the default policies of the major parties, then it eases our path to independence.
The biggest target has been the dominant political party in Texas – the Republican Party. Our efforts last made headlines in 2016 when we made a near-successful run at adding pro-TEXIT language to the Texas Republican platform and made history in the process. The effort was broader but quieter for the 2018 convention. However, the 2020 convention is where we would see victory in this effort.
After a last-ditch effort by local Republican leaders to block our resolutions from ever hitting the convention, a TNM-authored plank acknowledging and reserving the right of secession passed with 93% of the vote.
Plank 65 of the proposed platform reads:
State Sovereignty: Pursuant to Article 1 Section 1 of the Texas Constitution, the federal government has impaired our right of local self-government. Therefore, federally mandated legislation that infringes upon the 10th Amendment rights of Texas, should be ignored, opposed, refused, and nullified. Texas retains the right to secede from the United States should a future president and congress change our political system from a constitutional republic to any other system.
TNM’s President Daniel Miller had this to say on the success of our plank:
“Today, we are vindicated. In 2016 we showed the world that a majority of Republicans in Texas support the right of Texas to stand as an independent, self-governing nation. Although we were robbed of official victory by the underhanded tactics of the RPT leadership, we persisted. The addition of the TNM’s plank means that no longer can Republican elected officials dismiss the issues surrounding TEXIT and the concerns about our relationship with the federal government and maintain any credibility. The new status quo means that any elected official standing under a Republican banner must acknowledge the right of secession and the importance of Texas independence to Texans. They ignore it at their own political peril.”
Miller also thanked the TNM’s supporters.
“Without you, such advances in independence are impossible. Let’s finish the job and make Texas a self-governing, independent nation.”
